If you have Norwegian sign language as your 1st language, or if in the opinion of experts you need to do so, then you are entitled to choose instruction in and by sign language in a sign language environment. Alternatively, you have the right to use an interpreter in regular upper secondary schools. If, after an expert appraisal, you are found to need it, you have the right to upper secondary education and training for
The right to instruction in and by sign language in a sign language environment only applies to junction schools. These are regular upper secondary schools that have differentiated training options for hearing impaired pupils. This right is restricted to what these schools offer, possibly in collaboration with other upper secondary schools.
You must state in your application that you wish to use an interpreter or receive instruction in a sign language environment. Even if the junction school is located in a county other than your home county, you must nevertheless submit your application to the admissions office in your home county. There are special rules for the sequence of admissions at junction schools. The admissions office in your home county can tell you about these rules. Along with your application you must submit an expert appraisal from the Education Psychology Services (PPT).
If you receive instruction at a junction school, you are entitled to be taught in accordance with the subject curriculum for Norwegian sign language, Norwegian for pupils with sign language, and English for pupils with sign language (the curricula can be found at www.udir.no/lareplaner). Such instruction is not defined as special education.
