Signal fitters do maintenance, fault rectification, and installation on different types of signaling systems for railways and streetcars. They maintain all kinds of signaling systems that have power-supply networks with voltages above 1000 Volts AC and 1500 Volts DC voltage. The work is performed both indoors and outdoors along the railway tracks or lines.

Working tasks primarily involve the following:

• installation, maintenance and fault rectification of relay-based systems, and electronic interlocking plants and road safety systems
• installation, maintenance and error rectification of equipment for automatic train controls (ATC)
• work with remote control and maneuvering systems for interlocking train plants
• laying and splicing underground cables, mounting cables in equipment, connections cabinets and technical rooms
• installation, maintenance and error rectification of mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment in and around the rails and tracks

The signal fitter is dependent on working together with many vocational groups, since the systems for operating a train or streetcar are closely interrelated. Therefore, the demand for technical insight in this vocation, as well as precision, cooperation, and flexibility, is high. The signal fitter works at times with tight deadlines, and must be able to cope with stress.

There are special health requirements – related, among other things, to hearing, eyesight, and colour vision.
