Key tasks include:

• maintenance associated with operations of ship machinery and appurtenant systems
• guard duty
• basic use of technical drawings and flow charts
• use of emergency procedures for the vessel–s alarm instructions
• use of tools, welding equipment and measuring/testing equipment typically used in maintaining ship machinery
• maintenance of valves and pipe systems

A ship engine mechanic should be able to work methodically, meticulously and independently. Cultural understanding, social skills, and the ability to work with others are important. You will often work on board a ship, and your duties will include normal guard duty. You should have a sense of responsibility, and be capable of following stringent security rules and requirements.

You must have an approved health certificate issued by an authorized seaman–s doctor.

A ship engine mechanic must satisfy the requirements for security training and documentation in the STCW convention.
