Calculation of points on admission to studies at colleges and universities

Admission to most courses of study after upper secondary school is regulated by competition. Grade points are calculated based on certificates from upper secondary school and training and bonus points earned in various other contexts. The sum of grade points and bonus points count when you apply.

Some courses of study have an entrance examination that counts in addition to or instead of grade points and bonus points.

The regulations below apply to admissions for the academic year of 2016-2017, according to currently available information. More information can also be found at www.samordnaopptak.no/info/.

Grade points

  • If you have 3 years upper secondary education and training all your subjects with number grades count when calculating your grade points.
  • Grade points are the average of all number grades (to two decimal places) multiplied by 10.
  • If you have improved your grade in a given subject as an external candidate, the new examination grade you have achieved will replace both the old examination grade and the final assessment grade if it is to your advantage.

Bonus points for sciences and foreign languages

Up to 4 bonus points can be awarded. You cannot achieve double bonus points for subjects that overlap.

  • 1 bonus point is awarded for each of the sciences mathematics R2 and physics 2 and for the programme subject foreign languages III.
  • 0.5 bonus point is awarded for other programme subjects from Natural science and mathematics studies and programme subjects in foreign languages with 140 hours.
  • 0.5 bonus point is awarded to the programme subjects Latin and Greek with a scope of 140 hours.
  • 0.5 bonus point is awarded for Vg3 general studies in the education programme for Agriculture, fishing and forestry.
  • Other publicly approved upper secondary education and training, IB-diploma, French baccalaureate and education from abroad may award bonus points, see Chapter 7 of the Regulations of 18 November 2008 concerning Amendment to Regulations for Admission to Higher Education (forskrift om opptak til høyere utdanning).
  • Note that more than 1.5 bonus points cannot be awarded for the same subject. Nor are bonus points awarded for foreign languages as a common core subject or for English as a programme subject.

Bonus points for underrepresented genders

  • One or two bonus points are awarded to applicants whose gender is clearly underrepresented among students or workers in a given education programme.
