A laboratory technician may work in research, production, diagnostics, forensic medicine, food safety, health and environment. The laboratory technician has knowledge of taking tests, an understanding of the production process and competence in chemistry and laboratory techniques.

to use and maintain instruments and equipment
to plan and take tests
to prepare tests for analyses and carry out analyses
to assess and verify analysis results
to ensure the traceability of analyses, equipment and test results
to cary out work in accordance with the prevailing regulations for health, safety and environment
to increase the efficiency of and improve methods, routines and procedures

A laboratory technician should be able to work independently and systematically. He should also be meticulous and patient, and cooperate with other specialists and users of laboratory results.
