Ambulance service is an extension of the special health service, responsible for acute medicine outside the hospital. Key tasks include:

• call-out to and transport of patients under all kinds of weather and road conditions
• examination, observation and identification of failure of vital organ functions in patients whose condition is uncertain
• prioritizing patients in acute situations when several are injured
• commencement of acute medical treatment and care
• report and documentation of patient information
• control and maintenance of call-out vehicles and medical equipment

To use the occupational title ”ambulance technician,” you must have authorization from the Norwegian Directorate of Health, see the Directorate of Health.

There are special requirements for evidence of skill in operating call-out vehicles (driving license, class B). Furthermore, good health and conduct are also prerequisites.
