What is student exchange?
Student exchange is your chance to take a year of upper secondary school (high school) abroad. It also means that students from all over the world come to experience school life here in Norway.
Who can be an exchange student?
Most exchange students are in their second year of upper secondary school (vg2). The main requirement is that you study at a school abroad that matches the level of your education in Norway.
Where can I go?
Popular destinations for Norwegian students include the USA, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. Your options depend on which exchange organization you choose to travel with.
What is it like to be an exchange student?
You live with a host family and attend a local school. You gain experience with school, language, and everyday life in another country.
Do I still have to apply to upper secondary school in Norway?
Yes. You must apply for a school place in Norway in the normal way and by the deadline, even if you plan to go on exchange.
Will the school year abroad be approved in Norway?
In some cases, the school year abroad can be approved as a full school year in Norway. This is not automatic and depends on the subjects and level.
What should I do before I go?
You should plan well in advance, talk to your school counselor, and inform the admissions office about your plans.
Is there financial support available?
Yes. There are scholarships that can cover part of the costs. Contact the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen) for more information.
